The metal with strong reducibility acts as the anode, undergoing oxidation and being consumed, while the protected metal acts as the cathode, thus avoiding corrosion. Because this method sacrifices the anode (the negative electrode of the galvanic cell) to protect the cathode (the positive electrode of the galvanic cell), it is called sacrificial anode protection.
